Freebie Friday is a semi-regular news feature where we talk about a freeware, just free or open source game. It can be anything from a throwaway web game to a free-to-play RPG or mobile puzzle game. This time: Skillshot.
The mobile game market may be swamped, it may be full of free-to-play games that have a frankly terrifying level of Big Brother-esque analytics monitoring, but there are still plenty of gems out there, and many of them are free (or ad supported) with fewer strings attached. It’s time for another one of those games that’ll suck up your time with a simple concept and elegant design: Skillshot, bouncing a rubber ball against a wall for the mobile generation (mind you, rubber balls are pretty mobile) available on iOS and all the major Android digital stores.
Engage in a squash-like single-player experience by trying to hit the ball against the wall as many times as possible, without hitting the floor twice in a row or going out of bounds. Carefully aim your shots by tapping into the tap area while the ball is within, making it fly away from the tap.
Made by small German development studio Newtronium, Skillshot is a time waster in the best possible sense: it’s very quick to pick up, but you can easily get hypnotised into trying again and again to bounce the ball against the wall as many times as you can. I mean, this game might never win a Golden Joystick, but like many of the other Freebie Friday games, it’s got that lovely visual style that compliments the gameplay.
